Here in Edmonton and across our part of Canada, we have growing organizations populated with successful people. Yet every single business contains a culture from within that is unlike no other in the world. The combination of mission, core values, guiding principles, beliefs, vision and norms equate to a unique combination of success. Every individual must focus on helping each other for continuous improvement.
As Dale Carnegie once said, “So if you aspire to be a good conversationalist, be an attentive listener. To be interesting, be interested. Ask questions that other persons will enjoy answering. Encourage them to talk about themselves and their accomplishments. Remember that the people you are talking to are a hundred times more interested in themselves and their wants and problems than they are in you and your problems. A person’s toothache means more to that person than a famine in China which kills a million people. […] Think of that the next time you start a conversation.
Outstanding organizational culture across our provinces means improving employee engagement and active listening skills at the same time. Leaders and managers who listen well increase collective performance and continuously build a growing and participative culture. The willingness to listen, understand, and involve everyone with issues, concerns, ideas, and challenges makes for a day filled with opportunity and teamwork.
Culture grows strong in six important ways:
- Participation and ideas: Engaged people contribute.
- Open door policy: Accessible leadership just makes sense.
- Vision: Direction means a clear path for all.
- Quality meetings: Sessions with substance means involvement and the chance to contribute.
- Rapport building: The best interactions happen on the ground floor.
- Planning: Goals and objectives are essential to help stem challenges. Planning brings results to the leaders and the team.
A stable culture is one of consistency. Over the course of time, employees will remember that fact that’s the company is one filled with ideas. In this still mixed up economy, a strong culture is the key driver for increased success. Results will happen.
